The rear-wheel drive car’s massive trunk gave it its nickname. Car enthusiasts in Germany have always known the unusual in car construction. For example, the rear-wheel drive VW 411 was nicknamed the “Coat Bear” (Schnüre) because of its long, forward-projecting trunk. All tongue-in-cheek, of course, because the hatchback was intended for those who had worked their way up from Beetle ownership. It brought a significant amount of vehicle volume to the road by Wolfsburg standards.
