DB BTs 30 container wagon, with Ekrt 212 “From House to House Zündapp”
Operating number: 010 203
Even before the war, standardized large containers were transported to customers using rail and road vehicles. However, the outbreak of World War II halted the further expansion of the system. In 1949, the DB revived the pa container system and decided to implement it on a large scale. While the containers were newly constructed, the underframes for the wagons were sourced from various pre-war wagons, which were plentiful despite war damage to their superstructures. Among the bogies used for conversion were Omm 34, which were classified as BT(hs) 30 and included in a common numbering system with BT wagons from other donor wagons. After the conversion of a total of 273 BT 30 wagons from various donor wagon types, the DB began exclusively building new container wagons in 1952. Reclassified as Lb(r)s577, the last converted BT 30 wagons were taken out of service in 1971. Numerous open and closed containers were built for a wide variety of cargo, and there were also special containers for liquids, foodstuffs such as beer and similar items, as well as for transporting frozen goods. From the late 1960s onwards, increasingly pressured by the advent of containers, the use of pa containers finally ended in the late 1990s.
