The progressive electrification of the main and the secondary lines of Germany required maintenance vehicles to ensure an always optimal condition of the overhead line. In order to be able to decommission the outdated vehicles from the beginning, new builds were procured by the Deutsche Reichsbahn from the end of the 1920s. Among other things, a very special “tower car” was built, powered by accumulators (housed in the stems), which in turn could be charged directly from the overhead catenary via the rectifier into the vehicle, completely independent of stationary charging stations.<\/p>\n
The battery tower railcars were equipped with a crew room and a complete workshop. They were mostly individually on the way, but could, if necessary, due to the attached control coupling and buffer, also carry material wagons. While the vehicles themselves were manufactured by J.A. Maffei , the electrical equipment came from SSW (Siemens Schuckert works) and the batteries from AFA (Accumulator Factory AG).<\/p>\n
The models were built between 1929 and 1933, resulting in a total of six vehicles, some of which differed in small details. They were stationed in Munich, Wroclaw and Augsburg. From epoch III, partial modifications have been made, e.g. additional sockets are mounted in the front, an open toolbox is mounted on one side of the chassis or the lamps are replaced. Thus, the vehicles looked at their service in the early 70s, sometimes quite different in some details. Unfortunately, none of the interesting vehicles has been preserved.<\/p>\n
Like its prototype, the LILIPUT models are equipped with a rotating work platform and foldable stage railing.<\/p>\n
